Breathing With the Moon: A Practice for Realignment

Lately I’ve been coming back to the most reliable compass we have: the breath.


Not the deep therapeutic techniques (I'll share more about those another time), but the gentle, steady rhythm of inhale… pause… exhale… pause.


This four-part pattern has been feeling like a mini ecosystem in my body, a reminder that my own inner tides follow the same cycles as the sky above and the earth below.


The inhale feels like the waxing moon: energy rising, ideas forming, momentum building.


The pause at the top mirrors the Full Moon when everything is illuminated and potent. It’s a moment of bright, active power.


Then comes the exhale: the waning, softening, and release.


And finally, that hush at the bottom, the pause after the breath empties out. To me, that space is the New Moon. The fertile void where all potential rests. Where we are asked to be still and simply receive the messages.


This same pattern lives inside the seasons too. Spring’s inhale, summer’s radiant pause, autumn’s exhale, winter’s deep rest.


Breathing this way feels like a remembering of the ancient cycles. Sometimes we simply need a reminder.

Four-Part Cycle Breath


  • Sit comfortably and bring a bit of scent into your space - burning incense, a couple drops of essential oil in a diffuser, or even fresh branches of eucalyptus.

  • Inhale for a count of 4

  • Hold for 4

  • Exhale for 4

  • Hold for 4

Move through this for a few minutes and let your breath stay soft, not strained. If it feels supportive, gently lengthen the count to 6-6-6-6 but only if your body welcomes it. Set a timer so you can sink fully in without managing time.


This is a small practice but it has a way of realigning us with the moon, the seasons, the body, and the wisdom that lives in the pauses.


May this breath gently guide you back to center.
